KSDM Strengthens Relations with Creative Industries

KSD Municipality held engagement session with all local Creative Arts Industry on Wednesday 28th March 2018 as part of the Building Inclusive Green Municipalities partnership (BIGM). KSD Municipality has partnered with the City of Surrey, in Canada for economic development. The sectors that have been identified for this partnership related to Tourism, Creative Industries as well as Agriculture.
The purpose of the session was to strengthen working relations between the municipality and local artists, share information on opportunities available to them as well as working together towards establishing a unified forum for the industry. KSD Municipality being the economic hub of the eastern region of the Eastern Cape and home of Nelson Mandela decided to vigorously embark on initiatives that will promote the aforesaid sectors as indicated.
The municipality has to be proactive and ensure that all the relevant stakeholders are able to participate in the development of this industry. Therefore, the opportunities that are created for all the people involved in the creative industries be it, film makers, crafters and all the relevant artists should benefit this sector.

The session was to ensure that gaps between Municipality and the creative industries sector are curbed. There are concerns that Creative Arts Industry is not well represented in municipal platforms where discussions and decisions regarding development are made. While the sector is also plays a vital role in the economic developments it does not have a unified voice to represent all artists.
Artists including film makers, fashion designers, musicians, visual artist, crafters and so on formed part of the meeting. Key support government departments and agencies such as DEDEAT, ECDC, SEDA, ECPTA, ECPACC and OR Tambo District Municipality also embraced the gathering. The session formed two panels from both the industry side and government side and engaged each other on how the industry can make a meaningful contribution towards local economic development. The industry requested government to provide them with a recording studio and have fashion shows to support them. The departments unpacked the plans and support catered for Creative Industry and artists were advised to make their work a formally through having a registered business.

The sector appreciated the Municipality for creating a platform to share information that will empower the local artists and transform their artistic work into business perspective. The Municipality made a commitment to convene the meeting on quarterly basis.
