In a bid to assist the needy members of the community of KSD during the COVID-19 lockdown and beyond, the Executive Mayor of King Sabata Dalindyebo Municipality, Cllr Nyaniso Nelani embarked on a drive to respond to COVID-19 challenges through establishing a centralized food and essential goods support bank.

This bank that was officially launched on Friday, 01 May 2020 at KEI Fresh Produce Market saw various businesses responding to the Mayor’s call by teaming up with KSD Municipality and donate food some essential goods.

The purpose is to mobilise businesses and anyone that can lend a hand in ensuring that the destitute homes are offered help they need.

Sharing light about the background of the initiative, the Executive Mayor mentioned that the purpose of the programme is to reach out to the destitute homes and assist them during the COVID-19 lockdown.

“Since there is huge demand of food support for our communities, KSD Municipality took a decision to establish a Food and Essential Support Bank. The Municipality has therefore mobilised businesses, KSD ambassadors and everyone assist in the form of donations.” Said the Executive Mayor.

He further mentioned that the initiative is also to embrace the drive by government at large to support those that are less fortunate.

The launch was attended by the EC MEC for Rural Development and Agrarian Reform,   Nomakhosazana Meth on behalf of the provincial government who thanked all the sponsors that have thrown their support behind KSD food bank programme.

“Food security is part of three pillars in the strategy in the fight of corona virus (COVID-19). Food bank is one of the strategy to launch food bank across the province to make sure there is s fare process of food distribution.” She said

In her address she also condemn those that misuse this process and food not reach those that are food insecure. The MEC appealed to NGOs, businesses, civil society and everyone to join hands and collaborate with government in the form of donations.  

During the launch, two beneficiaries received food parcels as a start of distribution. The beneficiaries thanked the municipality for the support saying that it will help them during COVID-19 lockdown.
