The Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture together with KSD Municipality had on the 19 November 2020 handed over sport equipment and playing attire to 14 Special Schools. The ceremony was held at one of KSD schools with special needs, Thembisa Special School.
These schools caters for learners that are physically disabled, Intellectually Impaired, deaf, blind, mild mentally handicapped and learners with behavioral disorder.
The provision of sports gear is aimed at resourcing schools that shoulder a huge responsibility of developing learners with special needs to be sport stars and also produce athletes that will in future collect medals in the Paralympics.
The donation is done in November as it is a month that is celebrated globally as a Disability Awareness Month. The Department also enunciated that sport can help to reduce the stigma and discrimination associated with disability as it can transform community attitudes, about persons with disabilities by highlighting their skills and reducing the tendency to use the disability instead of the person.
Mr Magqabi, principal of Thembisa Special School expressed words of encouragement and appreciation for the donation of the sporting equipment.
