As it has been stated in the State of the Nation Address (SONA) and Eastern Cape State of the Province Address (SOPA), reconstruction of economy and recovery plan is one of the key priorities that the government is set to focus on. This priority intends to address the challenge of unemployment that the outbreak of COVID 19 pandemic has made it worse than before.
In efforts to achieve that commitment, the Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane visited Mthatha on Thursday 9 April 2021, to unveil a provincial government support worth R19 million given to thirteen (13) Small Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) beneficiaries from around OR Tambo region.
The businesses are funded under Isiqalo Youth Fund which aims at supporting young people business initiatives as well as Local and Regional Development Fund (LRED). The programme is coordinated by the Office of the Premier of the Eastern Cape province.
The Premier indicated that government could create massive jobs through SMMEs. “Government is committed to support young people who are working very hard to create employment and improve their lives” he said.
He also indicated that government is taking an approach to treat SMME’s as investors and create a conducive environment for them instead of lending support through monetary terms.
