The Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE), Gwede Mantashe had on the 17 April 2021 visited King Sabata Dalindyebo Municipality to inspect electrification. The project was implemented through DMRE’s Integrated National Electricity Programme which aims to actively contribute towards sustainable development and economic growth through universal access to electrification in the country.
Minister was joined by MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Mr Xolile Nqatha, OR Tambo District Municipality Executive Mayor, Cllr Thokozile Sokhanyile, KSD Executive Mayor, Cllr Nyaniso Nelani, Eskom CEO, Mr. Andre de Ruyter and various stakeholders.
The department has electrified 1100 houses in Mthatha West, Maiden Farm and Bongweni under KSD Municipality.
The minister indicated that these electricity connection projects are part of efforts of the department of Mineral Resources and Energy of addressing the 13% which do not have access to electricity.
KSD Municipality is currently faced with an electrification backlog especially in Mqanduli which the KSD Executive Mayor mentioned that through continuous support from the DMRE the municipality will be able to address such challenge.
Eskom CEO revealed that the entity has engaged with the municipality in order to provide support to capacitate it (Municipality) on issues of maintenance, billing and connections so that service delivery is improved.
The Minister went on to visit some families and handed over electricity vouchers and parcel which includes two burner stoves, blankets, groceries.
