Mandela Day is a platform created by United Nations (UN) in honour of the world icon Dr Nelson Mandela for individuals to take 67 minutes of their time to do good and serve their communities.
In KSD, Mandela Day was celebrated through various activities. These include handing over of gardening tools to 250 households of Mvezo Village and handing over of 500 school shoes and essential packs to Mandela School of Science and Technology.
The programme was led by Nelson Mandela’s grandson Nkosi Mandla Mandela and was joined by Eastern Cape Premier, Oscar Mabuyane and KSD Municipality Executive Mayor, Cllr Nyaniso Nelani and O.R. Tambo District Municipality Executive Mayor, Cllr Thokozile Sokanyile.
The agricultural tools were donated by Minister of Agriculture, Land reform and Rural Development Department, Thoko Didiza whereas school shoes and essential items were donated by Uhuru shoemakers and Unilever.
On the same day, KSD Municipality led by Portfolio Head for Special Programmes and Social Services, Cllr Gana handed over 500 seedlings to Lilitha community members under ward 4 and also organised a soup kitchen for the children working and staying on the street at e Tipini entrance. The events were done in partnership with Nelson Mandela Museum, Ibandla lasemthini and Panel-City.
There are other several activities that are outlined by the Municipality to commemorate the Nelson Mandela Month. These comprise the facilitation of soup kitchen for a minimum of 130 children from Mthatha Town surrounding who are working and staying on the streets. This event will take place at Freedom Square Munitata.
