In line with the government’s plans to tap into the ocean’s economy for development and change the lives of the underprivileged rural communities living in the coastal area, KSD Municipality has on the 07th of November 2023 handed over the fishing equipment to seven (7) Coffee Bay fishing cooperatives.

KSD Municipality established partnerships with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), Walter Sisulu University (WSU) and ECRDA to enhance capacity building to ensure optimal employment levels and increase effectiveness and efficiency within the Oceans Economy for KSD Municipality, and lastly to identify regulatory impediments that slow down the development and growth of the small-scale fishing sector and where applicable, propose changes to such regulations.

The fishing equipment consists of rods and reels, boots, fishing wader, and life jackets (59 each). Seven cooperatives benefitted from this initiative include Siyaloba Primary Cooperative, Siyaphambili Primary Cooperative, Njixiza Mathokazini Primary Cooperative, Ngoko Primary Cooperative, Sikhaleni Primary Cooperative, Dalintlutha Primary Cooperative and Buna Sizindeni Primary Cooperative.

In the past, fishing cooperatives received support in the form of refrigerated container harvest storage and fishing rights. Additionally, the fisheries were equipped with fishing safety protocols.
