KSD Municipality Tourism & Attraction
The King Sabata Dalindyebo Municipality is situated in the Eastern Cape Province in South Africa, heartlands of isiXhosa people in the birthplace of King ‘Sabata Dalidyebo’ and former president Nelson Mandela. KSD Municipality is one of five local municipalities within the OR Tambo District Municipality.
KSD Municipality is a homeland of the Aba Thembu Royal Kingdom, which is president. The region has a rich cultural heritage with a number of sites and museums dedicated to the memory of Nelson Mandela. There’s no end to the opportunities for adventure within the municipal area as it offers beautiful attractions, namely:
Mthatha Dam
Mthatha Dam is an earth-fill type dam located on the Mthatha River, near Mthatha, Eastern Cape, South Africa. It was established in 1977 and serves mainly for municipal and industrial purposes. Its hazard potential has been ranked high (3).

Luchaba Nature Reserve
A 460ha nature reserve made up of a series of wetlands and grasslands, the Luchaba Nature Reserve has seen the recent reintroduction of various indigenous species as well as wetland conservation efforts in restoring the area to its former biodiversity. Boasting countryside views, a host of thriving wildlife and the ultimate in tranquillity, Luchaba Nature Reserve can be found just outside of the town of Umtata, adjacent to the Mthatha Dam.

Hole in the wall
The archway at Hole in the Wall was created by a combination of the persistent pounding waves and river many years ago.
There is a little holiday village of the same name overlooking this rocky phenomenon located at the mouth of the Mpako River in Coffee Bay.
Xhosa legend holds that this is the gateway to the world of their ancestors and they refer to it as “esiKhaleni”, which means “place of thunder” or “place of sound”.

Coffee Bay
Coffee Bay is a laid-back coastal village with a constant flow of travellers and visitors from around the Country and the world. The town was named Coffee Bay in 1893 after shipwreck lost its cargo of coffee beans near the coast. Coffee Bay has excellent waves for learners and advanced surfers alike not forgetting the adventurous Mapuzi caves.
Nelson Mandela Museum (Bhunga Building)
To give a true overview of Nelson Mandela in all phases of his life, from his youth in Qunu to his role as statesman, the museum built in his honour comprises three separate structures: the Bhunga Building in Mthatha, the Qunu component and an open-air museum at Mvezo, where Madiba was born.
The Nelson Mandela Museum is situated on the N2 highway in Mthatha in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province. It promises visitors a memorable cultural experience and insight into the life of Nelson Mandela, with guided tours and a heritage trail that follows the story of his life.
Did You Know?
The historic Bhunga (translated loosely as council or caucus) building accommodates an exhibition tracing Nelson Mandela’s journey, as told in his own words, and narrated in part from his acclaimed biography A Long Walk to Freedom. It also showcases a diverse selection of the gifts bestowed on South Africa’s most-beloved statesman, Madiba, during his presidency.

Mvezo-Cultural Village
The Mvezo Village is mainly known as birthplace of Nelson Mandela, whose family serves as its chiefly dynasty. It is located on the plateau above the cool Mbashe River which runs through breathtaking river valley.
Mqhekezweni Great Place
Mqhekezweni is a very significant early great place of Abathembu nation under King Dalindyebo, it was the of the regent King Jongintaba Mtirara. UNESCO has recently recognised Mqhekezweni Great Place as a World Heritage Site as it holds a special significance as a place where the world icon, Nelson Mandela grew up.
Anglican Cathedral of St Johns
The Eastern Cape Craft Hub was established in 2006 as a permanent platform for artists and crafters from Eastern Cape Region. This studio and warehouse have got an incredible collection of work, carefully curated from artists in the region, the work ranges from visual art to beadwork, sculptures, furniture, fashion, traditional wear, ceramics, woodwork, woven rugs and textile products.

One can discover a natural adventure in one of the King Sabata Dalindyebo Villages which is Tyumbu, Tyumbu waterfalls are a stunning display of nature’s power and beauty.
