Following last month’s devastating floods in KSD Municipality, which resulted in fatalities and left many residents homeless, the Eastern Cape Legislature Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) had on the 16 July 2025 conducted an oversight visit to the area. The Committee was welcomed by the municipal leadership, led by the KSD Executive Mayor, along with officials from the Office of the Premier and other departments.
During the visit, the Committee assessed the disaster response efforts and addressed misleading claims circulating on social media, which alleged that some municipal officials had opened floodgates near Mthatha, contributing to the severe flooding in Mthatha West amongst other allegations. The oversight visit also included inspections of mass care centres currently providing shelter to flood victims.
