Department Overview: 

The Community Services Department is responsible for providing essential municipal services to enhance environmental quality, waste management, recreation, and public amenities.  

Functions of the Community Services Department 

• Solid Waste Management
• Management of Parks and Open Spaces
• Environmental and Coastal Management
• Manage and maintain Cemeteries and Crematoria
• Manage and maintain Animal Pound
• Manage and maintain Sport and Recreational Facilities
• Expanded Public Works Programme: Environmental & Social Sector
• Energy Efficiency and Climate Change
• Manage and maintain Public Ablution Facilities

The department is structured into two divisions, each with specific responsibilities and functions: 

Solid Waste Management Division

• Cleaning of streets, markets, public spaces and strategic placement of waste bins to reduce littering   

• Refuse removal in all billable households, commercial refuse removal and clearing and beautification of illegal dumping sites   

• Management of landfill sites 

Environmental Quality Management and Amenities Division 

• Parks and Management of Open Spaces including beautification and green 

• Management and maintenance of municipal amenities i.e. Animal Pounds; Sport and Recreational Facilities; Cemeteries and Crematoria; and Public Ablution Facilities 

• Environmental and Coastal Management Services  

• Energy Efficiency and Climate Change
