Department Overview

The Rural and Economic Development Department is responsible for developing local Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and Rural Development to improve economic growth and create job opportunities for KSD Municipality Communities 

The key performance areas of the department include:   

  • Development and Implementation of Local Economic Development Strategy 
  • Rural Development (Forestry and Agriculture) and Support 
  • MSMEs (formal, informal and cooperatives) Development and Support 
  • Tourism, heritage, arts and culture function and support 
  • Provision of tools of trade for MSMEs and economic infrastructure 
  • Business Licensing 
  • Development & maintenance of the MSME Database 
  • Trade and Investment Promotion 
  • Implementation of the Ward-Based Projects 

Rural and Economic Development Department (RED) Functions:  

Rural Development Function  

The department aims to enhance the living standards of rural communities by promoting sustainable agricultural and forestry practices. This includes initiatives to improve infrastructure, access to markets, and the adoption of modern farming techniques. 

Business and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Development (MSME) Function 

The department supports MSMEs through funding, training, and mentorship programs. These initiatives are designed to promote entrepreneurship, job creation, and economic growth, thereby fostering a vibrant business environment in rural areas. 

Tourism Development Function  

Tourism development is a key focus area, aiming to boost the local economy, create jobs, and foster cultural interaction. The department works on promoting local tourist attractions, improving tourism infrastructure, and enhancing the overall visitor experience. 

Community Development Function  

Ward-based and community development involves working closely with local communities to identify their needs and aspirations. This participatory approach ensures that development initiatives are aligned with the community’s priorities and contribute to their overall well-being.
