The King Sabata Dalindyebo Municipality, in collaboration with National and Provincial Departments is working tirelessly to provide disaster response following the devastating floods that struck King Sabata Dalindyebo Municipality and the broader Eastern Cape on the 10th of June 2025. These floods have claimed the lives of at least 90 members of KSD community, including learners and have left many more displaced and in distress.
The displaced residents were provided an emergency shelter in the community halls and schools and provided with food, water, clothing, mattresses, blankets, and medical and psychosocial support. In addition to that, donations of food, clothing, hygiene items, and blankets are being made by various organisations and businesses.
President Cyril Ramaphosa, Ministers, Premier Oscar Mabuyane and Members of the Executive Council visited the affected areas to assess the damage made by the floods and to engage with the affected communities to evaluate the impact of the incident.
On behalf of KSD Municipality, the Executive Mayor Cllr Nyaniso Nelani extended his heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones and to all those whose lives and livelihoods have been disrupted. He applauded the rapid and coordinated response by government at all levels, including the visit made by President Cyril Ramaphosa to assess the situation and provide the leadership.
The Disaster Management personnel, Search and Rescue teams and community volunteers were commended for braving the extreme conditions to save lives and search for those that were swept away by the floods.
