The KSD Municipality recently hosted the Play for Energy Schools Competition. The competition organized by the Community Services Department challenged learners from local high schools to showcase their understanding of energy efficiency and sustainability through various forms of art.
The competition was one of the innovative and inspiring ways of KSD’s efforts to engage youth in discussions about energy efficiency and climate, as the Municipality has also established the KSD Youth Climate Change Council.
The competition included three components. The first component was a poster design, which required learners to develop a poster that demonstrates their understanding of the concept of energy efficiency and sustainability through art. The second component was essay writing that highlights ways that energy efficiency reduces the impact of climate change, highlighting the importance of saving energy in our homes, schools and communities, and the last component was building a model demonstrating the energy efficiency and sustainability in the homes, school and community.
Participating schools from Mthatha included Jumba High School, Zimele High School, Sinolwazi High School, Leslie Nkala High School, Xolilizwe Sangoni High School, Holly Cross High School, St. John’s College, Nozuko High School, Mthatha High School, Zingisa Comprehensive High School and Khanyisa High School.
All participating schools received certificates of participation for their efforts in raising awareness about energy efficiency and its importance in combating climate change, while the top three schools were awarded prizes for their outstanding performance.
The top three winners were Mthatha High School, which went away with a prize worth R15 000.00. The second runner was St. John’s College, which went home with R10 000, while Zingisa Comprehensive High School took third place and received a R5 000.00 prize.
Ms. Ndawone and Ms. Khundla delivered words of encouragement, motivating the learners and recognizing their efforts.
