In response to the recent severe flooding that impacted Mthatha on the 10th of June 2025, the King Sabata Dalindyebo (KSD) Municipality is actively collaborating with the Department of Human Settlements to provide permanent housing solutions for the 1,400 displaced residents currently residing in community halls and schools.
The unprecedented floods have resulted in significant infrastructure damage and the displacement of numerous families. KSD Municipality, in partnership with the Department of Human Settlement, is committed to ensuring that all affected individuals are relocated to temporary housing within 30 days.
To expedite this process, the municipality is identifying suitable land parcels for construction. This initiative aims to provide safe and stable conditions for those affected by the disaster.
Executive Mayor Cllr Nyaniso Nelani stated, “We understand the hardship our residents are facing due to the current floods. Our priority is to provide the flood victims with permanent housing solutions. We are also committed to restore the dignity of our residents and ensure they have a safe place to call home.”
The KSD Municipality extends its heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones during this tragic event. The municipality remains dedicated to support all affected residents and is working tirelessly to restore normalcy to the community.
The 19th of June was declared as the Provincial mourning day for the victims and the memorial service was held at KSD TVET College, Cicirha Campus.
