King Sabata Dalindyebo Local Municipality in its effort of formalising the Informal Waste Pickers has launched the KSDLM Waste Pickers Forum. This follows an initiative by national department to formalise the waste picking industry and register them into the National database.
Among the stakeholders who attended and presented in this launch held on Wednesday, 13 November, were South African Waste Pickers Association, African Reclaimers Association, SEDA, PETCO, POLYCO, Walter Sisulu University, O.R Tambo District Municipality and Black owned successful buyback centres in Durban.
This initiative will further assist the Waste Pickers to interact directly with the organisations that fight for their rights and organisations that will further assist them in mentoring for establishment of buy back centres in King Sabata Dalindyebo local Municipality.
The KSDLM Waste Pickers Forum will assist the Municipality in ensuring that we reach to all waste pickers within the Municipality through formal and recognised structures.
