KSD’s Local Geographical Names Committee (LGNC) hosted on Thursday, 10 July 2025, the Eastern Cape Provincial Geographical Names Committee (ECPGNC) at Mthatha Stadium, soon to be changed into Jerald Raymond Hawkes Stadium. Speaking on this event, the Deputy Chairperson of ECPGNC, Cllr S. Sello, revealed that, among the Municipalities they have visited regarding geographical name changing, KSD is the best Municipality in the advancement of the geographical name changing practice.
The Deputy Chairperson further applauded the alignment of geographical name changing with the IDP, and he further revealed that KSD is the first Municipality to take this route of aligning geographical name changes with the IDP.
Adding to this eulogy, ECPGNC Mayoral Nominee Cllr. N. Gcingca advised that all the local Municipalities under O. R. Tambo District Municipality have to do their benchmarking, in as far as geographical name change is concerned, at KSD.
The meeting was also apprised that Madeira Street has been changed to Dr. Dan Pasiya Street, while Sutherland has been changed into General Sabelo Victor Gqweta Street. These are the people who distinguished themselves in the struggle and philanthropical deeds and the community members of KSD nodded that these are the right names to replace those names with colonialism origin.
Wrapping up the meeting, KSD Speaker, Cllr N. Siyo Sokutu acknowledged that there is a lot to be done by the Municipality in as far as geographical name changing is concerned and further advised KSD to always provide the budget for this exercise so that our name changing processes are not derailed.
The Chairperson of ECGNC, Mr. Christian Martins also eulogised KSD with its concise presentation and further advised that the Municipality must ensure that it does not deviate from its stance of sticking to the correct processes when embarking on geographical names changing, by so doing, this will reduce any chances of being challenged by the people.
