MEC Ngongo Unveils KSD Renamed Landmarks, Honouring Local Heroes

Thursday, November 20th, marked a historic day for our community as the KSD Municipality officially unveiled newly renamed geographical landmarks. In a ceremonial event, the MEC for the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Ms. Sibulele Ngongo, cut the ribbon and revealed the new names, symbolizing a new chapter for these beloved locations.

Among these characteristics are:

1. Sutherland Street which is changed to General Sabelo Gqwetha Street.

2. Dr. Dan Pasiya Street has replaced Madeira Street.

3. Gerald Raymond Hawkes, formerly known as Mthatha Stadium.

The unveiling of these renamed geographical features forms part of KSD Municipality’s programme of assigning a new name or correcting an existing name of a place, street, or public facility to better reflect local history, culture, and identity. The initiative, guided by the South African Geographical Names Council (SAGNC) Act, also aimed at celebrating our region’s heritage and identity, fostering community pride and a sense of place.

This significant event celebrates the remarkable contribution of Gerald Raymond Hawkes, General Sabelo Gqwetha and Dr. Dan Pasiya to our society.
