In an effort to maintain a clean environment in and around Mthatha, the King Sabata Dalindyebo Municipality has carried out a cleanup campaign. A week-long effort that began on April 23–25, 2025, was a part of the Community Services Department’s ongoing action plan on cleaning and education initiatives. These initiatives are also aligned with monthly commemorations.
In March the campaign was aligned with Human Rights commemoration, while this month (April) the campaign was aligned with Freedom Month under the theme “We might be free from apartheid, but we are not free from environmental degradation, pollution, and climate change” and was conducted in collaboration with Usindiso Lomphefumlo Non-Profit Organization (NPO), KSD Waste Pickers and Eastern Cape Recyclers.
After the cleaning, the participants marched to raise awareness of about cleanliness.
Since everyone has a responsibility to keep the area clean, the Municipality has taken action to involve learners in the vicinity of the KSD schools to take charge and promote clean environment. This clarion cry will be extended beyond the school to include the taxi industry and other interested parties.
