In a progressive move towards enhancing road safety and enforcing municipal by-laws, the King Sabata Dalindyebo Local Municipality officially launched its new traffic camera system on Friday, 10 October 2025 at Munitata Freedom Square.
This milestone initiative forms part of the Municipality’s ongoing efforts to promote safer roads, uphold law and order, and support the collective fight against crime.
The newly installed speed trap and red traffic light violation cameras are an important step in promoting road safety and reducing traffic violations in the area. The cameras, which are designed to automatically capture images of vehicles that exceed the speed limit or run red lights, will act as a deterrent to risky driving behaviour and make the roads safer for all users.
As part of the launch, Syntell a leading service provider in traffic management solutions, generously donated technology devices and a printer to assist the Municipality in efficiently issuing traffic citations. This partnership underscores the shared commitment to improving law enforcement capabilities through modern technology.
Importantly, the initiative has also created employment opportunities for four local residents who have been trained to operate and manage the camera systems. This reflects KSD Municipality dedication not only to innovation and safety but also to empowering local communities through job creation.
Executive Mayor, Cllr Nelani emphasized that this development marks a significant step towards a safer, smarter and more compliant KSD Municipality where technology and community work hand in hand for the greater good.
The launch, which was heralded by the Road Safety Awareness Campaign conducted at Ultra City as part of observing October as Transport Month, brought together stakeholders from various organizations, including the South African Police Service, Taxi industry, National Prosecution Authority, Department of Transport, and Liquor Board, who all expressed their support for the initiative.
