The King Sabata Dalindyebo Municipality in partnership with SANRAL handed over the emergency road maintenance of the R411 National route, which is the road from Viedgesville to Coffee Bay in a gathering yesterday at the Mqanduli Multipurpose Centre.
This newly transferred route to National, will soon be revived to make it drivable and safe. Speaking at the event the KSD Municipality’s Executive Mayor, Cllr G.N. Nelani, said, “this is a milestone that all KSD communities should be pleased about because this means growth for the KSD economy and a step closer to archiving the Metro status sought for”, he concluded.
The scope of this project entails route patrol, potholes, edge breaks, pavement layers, cleaning of concrete drains, cleaning of earth drains, removal of edge built-up, litter cleaning, shoulder repair, minimum road signs to be erected, guardrails in emergency areas, road markings, grass cutting and emergency standby.
The contractor that was awarded the project is Rainbow Civils. Consultants on the project is AVAT Consulting Engineers. Together, these companies will ensure that this route is user friendly. The R411 route refurbishment is divided into two parts. The first part is the emergency maintenance which is the one being dealt with and at the engagement, second part in the ‘three to four (3-4) years project. This is not the main project but an emergency fix in the meantime while waiting for the “big” project that is in the pipeline.
The route description of R411 National Route Section 1 starts at Viedgesville and ends at Coffee Bay. It will be a single carriageway with two lanes, surfacing: Cape Seal- 19mm, road reserve width 17.8m varying, surface width of 12m including shoulder (which will vary between 1.7m to 2.8m). This project will take 11 months until completion.
