On the 27th and 28th of January 2020, the Department of Communications in partnership with Department of Social Development ,King Sabata Dalindyebo Municipality and OR Tambo District Municipality have embarked on a journey to visit schools that are under King Sabata Dalindyebo Municipality for Back to School Programme.
The purpose of the programme was to congratulate the good work done by the schools and also to motivate learners to do their best with their studies.
Schools visited were Ngangelizwe S.S.S. in Mthatha and Dalibaso S.S.S. in Mqanduli which are part of the schools that performed very well in 2019 Matric Results.
Part of the Back to School programme was to launch cyber labs in both schools (Ngangelizwe S.S.S. and Dalibaso S.S.S.) in order to equip learners with digital skills that Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) demands for future jobs and economy.
Launching these labs, the Minister of Communications Ms Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams highlighted that the labs will assist learners to have basic computer skills. She also warned the learners not to use the computers to open sites which have nothing to do with their studies but to strictly use them for their studies.
“We are very excited that we have undertaken this excises to ensure that the programmes that we have committed as the Department are realised and key to that is the building of capable forth industrial revolution army which talks to the provision of digital skills,” said Minister.
The programme also benefited 200 learners with school uniforms which were handed over by the Minister of Social Development Ms Lindiwe Zulu and 400 learners with sanitary pads.
Speaking at the event, KSD Executive Mayor, Cllr Nyaniso Nelani pleaded with the community to report criminals who steal the computers. He stated that the unlawful act of stealing or vandalising school equipment does not only destroy the future of learners and generations to come but it also limits chances to improve a better standard of living for disadvantaged learners.
