Kwantozonke Market Centre in Mthatha CBD will soon receive a major facelift. The Market is one of the historic monuments of Mthatha and a viable platform for driving economic growth. The upgrading of the Market has been approved by the Department of Small Business Development and an investment of R12m has been allocated to renovate and enhance the Market Centre.

KSD Executive Mayor, Cllr Nyaniso Nelani officially introduced the construction company that will carry out the project Wednesday, 29 March 2023 at Mthatha City Hall. In his address, he pointed out that the KwaNtozonke Market plays an important role in achieving the economic objectives of the municipality. He added that the project will bring real change to the market and not only will it encourage local economic development but will also assist the municipality to realise its vision of becoming a Metro.

The facelift of the market will see it benefit from complete changing of roof covering, paintworks, floor coverings, plumbing works, burglar guards installation, backup water system, electric installation (lighting), signage (digital outdoor and sign boards) fencing, external works (paving, drainage system and parking), drainage system, carpentry works (doors etc.) and furniture.

Traders will be provided with temporal mobile shelter for their relocation during construction.

The project has commenced and the construction works are expected to be completed within 6 months. At least 20 temporary job opportunities will be created during the construction period.
