Access to electricity is one of the basic needs of citizens, and the government has a mandate to provide electricity to all. KSD Municipality and Eskom continue to ensure that our villages have access to electricity. As a result, the two entities are rolling out an electrification programme as part of the Integrated Development Plan (IDP). The rollout follows the needs raised by these villages during IDP community consultations that are conducted every year.

The Member of the Mayoral Committee and the Portfolio Head for Infrastructure, Cllr Ziyanda Nokayi stated that “It is our mandate as the Municipality and Eskom to plan for the electrification needs of the communities and ensure that each financial year we take a portion of those needs.”

Eighty-nine homes in five villages will receive electricity as part of the project. Dosi and Mpheko in ward 14, Dlomo in ward 16, Ntabeni in ward 31, Link in ward 10, and Mpunzana are a few of these villages.

Three contractors (Bisifield, Ukunqoba Distributors and Group 4 Technologies) will undertake the project for a period of six months commencing in August 2023.

At least 15 jobs will be created for locals and SMMEs will also benefit.

For this initiative, a sum of R9 million has been set aside.

Cllr Ziyanda Nokayi further urged communities to collaborate with contractors to ensure the successful completion of both projects.
