KSD Municipality Executive Mayor, Cllr. G.N. Nelani led a team of law enforcement officers during the Festive Season Road Safety launch on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, at Decolign Junction.

Addressing the law enforcement officers, the Executive Mayor emphasised the importance of ensuring that all motorists abide by the rules and regulations of the road while encouraging the officers from KSD Municipality and SAPS to practice due diligence when carrying out their expected duties.

KSD Tourism in collaboration with ECPTA and O.R. Tambo DM, has joined the Festive Season Road Safety through Tourism Safety Awareness Campaign, whose goal is to address issues that can reduce the likelihood of events that endanger tourist safety. It is about putting in place measures to ensure that domestic and foreign tourists feel safe even before they arrive at their destination. The team distributed tourism brochures, encouraging the creation of an atmosphere conducive to the growth and development of tourism in the region.

These operations started at Freedom Square, Munitata Building, with a parade from law enforcement officers and proceeded to Mthatha Vehicle Testing Centre, where some impounded vehicles were tested for roadworthiness, closing it off with a roadblock at Decolign junction.

Prior to the launch, our Community Services, Rural & Economic Development, Human Settlements and Public Safety departments embarked on an inspection of spaza shops. The operation was jointly conducted with SAPS, Department of Home Affairs (specifically the Immigration Unit), and the Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (Consumer Protection Unit).

The objective is to ensure that spaza shops adhere to retail regulations and municipal by-laws.

More than 1,000 illicit, counterfeit and expired goods that are hazardous to consumers were removed from shelves. Eleven illegal immigrants were arrested and charged with contravening the Immigration Act.

We urge all informal traders to apply for trading permits and should visit Rural and Economic Development Offices for assistance.
