KSD Municipality partnered with Department of Social Development, Songe Social Change and Eastern Cape Liquor Board to conduct a Gender Based Violence Substance Abuse Awareness Campaign. The programme took place on 15 February 2023 at Phola Park under Ward 12.
This initiative was led by MMC for Special Programme’s Unit, Cllr. Noluyolo Mayi alluding to the importance of unity amongst communities to tackle all social and societal challenges.
Issues discussed at length at this gathering included youth unemployment, gender based and substance abuse, violent crime amongst others. Nevertheless, possible remedies were sought from the participants who in turn provided a list of advice.
The remedies included, programmes aimed at educating men on how to treat women better vice versa, programmes to upskill the youth and expand their capabilities. Another suggestion was from local men asking that SAPS take their reported abuse cases seriously as well as a visit by the Department of Home Affairs as it was established that there are many undocumented residents in Ward 12, in particular, Phola Park.
