KSD Mayoral Committee led by the Executive Mayor and Council Speaker visited Mandela Park under ward 11 and Ntshabeni Location under ward 10 to hand over blankets and food parcels to a number of 20 senior citizens. This gesture of goodwill was done to observe Nelson Mandela International Day is an annual international day in honour of Dr. Nelson Mandela. It is celebrated each year on 18 July on his birthday. The day was officially declared by the United Nations in November 2009, with the first United Nations Mandela Day held on 18 July 2010.
The day was wrapped up at Mthatha Dam resort where KSD Municipality together with South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) gathered about 200 elderly people for a day out and received blankets.
The KSD Executive Mayor, Cllr Nyaniso Nelani said that the Municipality decided to focus on senior citizen to appreciate them for their contribution to build the society. “Today the Municipality decided to spend time with you as senior citizens as a way of showing appreciation for your contribution in the society. We further urge senior citizens to assist in preaching the values of our Icon, Nelson Mandela in order to revive the morals of the society”, he said. He continued thanking SAMSA for their contribution towards making the day a success.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Ms Vivian Gcolobela expressed their gratitude to KSD Municipality and SAMSA. “We are delighted by this act of love towards us as elderly people.
