Ntinga O.R. Tambo Development Agency SOC Ltd in partnership with O.R. Tambo District Municipality and King Sabata Dalindyebo Municipality, has on Tuesday, May 21, 2024 launched Kei Fresh Produce Market and introduced its new market agency, Eyoluntu Project Market Agency.
The purpose of the launch is to strengthen primary production, improve access to markets by local farmers and improve the agro-processing value chain.
In her keynote address, Deputy Minister of Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD), Zoleka Capa, stressed the importance of supporting local farmers as they contribute to job creation and economic growth saying that the food suppliers of hospitals, schools and prisons should buy from this market.
She added that the market should also accommodate those in the creative industry (bid work and traditional attire) in order to make this centre a one-stop shop.
The Farmers Association expressed their support by urging municipalities to help farmers with transportation so they can get their goods to Kei Fresh Produce Market and by calling for ongoing engagements between the farmers and government to advance the agriculture sector.
The Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs, and Tourism stated that it supports farmers by monitoring their output and making sure it complies with regulations. Together with other role players, DEDEAT is facilitating the provision of cold storage to maintain the freshness of the goods.
KSD Executive Mayor, Cllr Nyaniso Nelani, in his closing remarks, appreciated the relaunch of the Kei Fresh Produce Market, stating that the initiative will assist our local farmers and boost the local economy. He further stated that KSD is committed to supporting the local SMMEs.
