KSD Municipality sworn-in new Council members during the first Council meeting held on the 17 August 2016 at Enkululekweni Council Chambers. The ceremony sworn-in 72 Councillors and 14 Traditional Leaders. The Council consists of 36 PR Councillors and 36 Ward Councillors. The meeting went on electing the Executive Mayor that became Cllr Dumani Zozo who was the ANC candidate. Cllr Zozo won the seat with 46 votes over Cllr Knock, a DA candidate who only got 3 votes. Cllr Nontyatyambo Gcingca was also elected unopposed as the Speaker of the Municipal Council and Cllr Sihlwele Nyengane was announced as a Single Whip of Council.
Executive Mayor accepted the position elected on by KSD community and promised that he will not disappoint in addressing issues that were raised during the election campaigns. He also thanked the outgoing Executive Mayor, Cllr Nonkoliso Ngqongwa for the sterling job she has done during her tenure.
“We have to work hard to address issues such as electricity problems, dirty streets, traffic lights that are not working, stray animals and make them something of the past. We are inviting the community and stakeholders to participate in the development of this Municipality. We need to change the image and culture of the institution so to provide efficient and descent services to the community” said the Executive Mayor.
Opposition parties congratulated and vowed their support to the elected Executive Mayor. “We commit as UDM to work together for the benefit of KSD community. We will support the Executive Mayor in doing his oversight duties and differ where it needs be” said Cllr Wandile Tsipa.
Traditional leaders also congratulated those elected and made a plea to strengthen working relations between the Ward Councilors and Traditional Leaders.
The Executive Mayor also announced his Mayoral Committee which includes Cllr Lindelwa Ntlonze retaining a position of Corporate Services Chairperson, Cllr Nombulelo Sibeko as Infrastructure Chairperson, Cllr Edgar Mapekula who was placed as Head of Budget and Treasury portfolio, Cllr Zoliswa Madyibi to oversee Planning, Research and Inter-governmental Relations portfolio, Cllr Nyaniso Nelani to lead Rural and Economic Development, Cllr Mzukisi Nyoka was assigned for Special Programmes Unit, Cllr Nomalizo Ndlela to be in charge of Community Services, Cllr Tsepo Machae to lead Public Safety portfolio and Cllr Thobeka Mtirara as the Chairperson for Human Settlement and Disaster Management.
The Executive Mayor also committed to come up with a 100 days programme that will look at challenges the Municipality is facing.
