KSD Municipality officially handed over 65 hawker stalls for Mthatha and Mqanduli informal traders. The facilities were built with a tune of R5 million with aims to improve the standards that street venders are operating in. The stalls are lockable with a storage and trading space. The stalls initiative is also municipal strategy set to achieve its vision of having more dirt free towns that will be attractive to tourists and investors. The hawkers are provided with wasted collection plastic in keeping the environment clean. “This is one of the most important business as it also contributes in the local economy hence the municipality is committed to provide it with all the necessary support such as these stall for it to thrive. There are many families that are making living through this business” said Executive Mayor during the handing over at Mqanduli. He further cited that the municipality is planning to have a trading store facility for informal traders and small businesses. Hawkers that are located stalls will sign a lease agreement stipulating terms and conditions for stall utilization. Mqanduli Hawkers Association Chairperson, Mr. Simthembile Ndungane appreciated and thanked the municipality for fulfilling its promise of providing informal traders with proper structures. “Our dream has been realized as hawkers, now we will operate in a decent environment. Hawkers had to endure all kind of weather conditions trying to make provision for their families which at some instances their health gets affected” Previously, the Municipality has empowered small businesses with training and tools of trade so that they can conduct their businesses better. These include sawing machine, laptops and printing machine.
