King Sabata Dalindyebo Municipality (KSDM) has been working together with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment (DFFE) to develop the fishing communities in Coffee Bay and Hole in the Wall.
These two institutions have assisted the fishers with formalisation of fishing activities through the registration of a minimum of seven (7) small scale fisheries cooperatives.
This initiative is in line with tap into the rich ocean’s economy towards the advancement of rural community development and changing the lives of the underprivileged communities from these coastal areas.
The fishers were individually awarded with fishing rights to allow them to fully participate in the fishing sector.
Subsequent to that, the cooperatives were provided by OR Tambo District Municipality with a refrigerated container in order to keep their harvest.
Lastly, a total of 112 fishers which are members of these cooperatives were equipped on fishing safety measures. This one-day awareness presentation on small scale fishing safety was conducted on 11th November 2020 in Coffee Bay by South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) in partnership with Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment.
